Midjourney’s default output is still the most immediately recognizable “good” AI image — rich lighting, coherent composition, a house style that art directors specifically request by name. FLUX trades some of that stylization for accuracy: it’s the strongest of the three at rendering legible text in-image, hitting precise prompts (hand poses, exact object counts, specific color codes), and photorealism that holds up under scrutiny. DALL·E 3 is genuinely good and improved a lot from earlier versions, but next to the other two its output reads as more generic — competent, rarely the one you’d pick for a portfolio piece.

DALL·E 3 doesn’t really have a learning curve because it doesn’t ask you to learn a prompt dialect — you describe what you want in plain conversation inside ChatGPT and iterate the same way. Midjourney has moved off Discord-only onto a full web app, which helped, but getting genuinely good results still rewards learning its parameters and reference-image workflow. FLUX is the hardest to just “use” — it’s a model, not a product, so your experience depends entirely on which interface you bolt onto it, from a slick hosted playground to raw API calls or a self-hosted ComfyUI graph.

FLUX wins this round outright. Pay-per-image API pricing lands in the low cents per generation at the Pro tier, and the Dev/Schnell weights are open — self-host on your own hardware and the marginal cost drops to electricity. Midjourney has no free trial anymore and its cheapest plan buys a limited pool of fast-generation time before throttling you into a slow queue. DALL·E 3 is effectively bundled into a ChatGPT Plus subscription that’s also paying for a full chat assistant, which is a good deal only if you’re going to use the rest of ChatGPT anyway.

FLUX’s lightweight Schnell variant is purpose-built for near-instant generation and it’s the fastest of the three when you don’t need the flagship Pro tier’s extra fidelity. DALL·E 3 returns images quickly inside ChatGPT’s normal chat cadence. Midjourney is genuinely fast when you’re spending Fast-GPU time, but once a plan’s fast-hours run out, Relax mode can mean a real wait — workable for a hobbyist, frustrating on a deadline.

Open weights are an ecosystem cheat code: FLUX shows up as an option in nearly every serious image-generation tool, from ComfyUI node graphs to every major inference API and fine-tuning pipeline, because anyone can integrate it without a partnership deal. DALL·E 3 benefits from OpenAI’s own distribution — ChatGPT, Bing Image Creator, the API — without needing third parties at all. Midjourney remains the most walled garden of the three; it’s improved its API access but still centers the product experience on its own app rather than plugging into everyone else’s.
